The Monroe Doctrine was meant to dissuade the Spanish from attempting to recapture any of their former colonies in South America. It stated: "The American continents are henceforth not to be considered the subjects for future colonization by any European powers."
1829 Age of Jackson Begins
To many, the election of represented a new era for America. His election was the first in which a popular vote was taken. He was the first president not to come from one of the original colonies. Jackson was considered a true popular hero and used his stature to strengthen the power of the presidency.
